Hossein Maher
The painter of southern Iran
Born in Abadan in 1957, Hossein Maher studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Tehran University. His work of the 1990s returned to the landscape of his childhood in the south, and over the decades since it has turned steadily inward — plants, vessels and solitary trees set against grounds that are scraped, rewritten and worked until they hold light like plaster.
